There are some very interesting characters in the book The Catcher and the Rye. Some of the characters are Holden Caulfield, the main character of the book, Ackley, Holden's next door neighbor, Stradlater, Holden's roommate at Pencey Prep, Jane Ghallager, and Phoebe and Allie Caulfield which are Holden's siblings.

Out of all of these characters in the book The Carcher in the Rye, my favorite character would probably have to be Phoeve Caulfield. Phoebe Caulfield is the younger sister of the main character, Holden(Sallinger 53). At eh begenning of the story Phoebe is mentioned but she is not actually introduced until towards the end of the book. Phoebe just really brings out the best in her older brother and that is a reason I like her so much. She is only ten years old, but she is as mature and acts as an adult, someone as old as twenty five. She is just very mature for her age and it is admirable. Holden talks very highly of his younger sister and says how he loves that she is happy and care free. She just gets excited about the littlest of things. For example, Phoebe has a Christmas play that is coming up pretty soon, and she can not wait or stop talking about. Holden loves how enthusiastic and excited she is about evrything. She is mature for her age, but still has the heart and happiness of a young kid. I like that about her. She has the best qualities of both. She shows worry for her brother Holden which is very sweet. She is younger than him by far but is still so worried about her older brother and just is worried that something will happen to him when their dad finds out that he has been expelled from his school. She probably would not be as worried if this had not happened before. Phoebe is also very strong for a little girl. She does not take anything from Holden, she makes him respect her, and this makes Holden like his sister a lot. She calls him out on things. There is just a lot of really good qualities about Phoeve and she is very easy to like as a reader. She helps keep Holden sane and help him make the right choices. She wants to protect her brother and their relationship is very sweet. She is by far my favorite character.

  1. Interesting that Phoebe wants to protect Holden from harm, and he wants to protect her from growing up.
