The author, Steinbeck, of Grapes of Wrath uses one of my favorite techniques to capture the reader into his story about the Joad's. He uses a lot of suspense. I love books where you can not put them down, and you have to keep turning the page to find out what happens next. When the book opens up Tom Joad is being released from prison for manslaughter(Steinback 13). From the very begining you are wanting to know what happened? Why did Tom Joad have to go to prison? Then throughout the book Tom commits two more murders. One being for his sister. When his youngest sister Ruthie tells someone at a camp about her brother. You then think, What is going to happen to Tom? His mother then sends him away and you wonder, Will they find him? Througout the whole entire novel a reader is wondering what is going to happen next? I really enjoy books where an author uses suspense to capture the reader.

The author also uses a very interesting story line and plot that captures the reader. With using things like murder and betrayel, the reader finds themselves in a story taking place in something that you could never imagine yourself being in. As a reader, I could not imagine being a sister to a murderer or let alone being responsible for a murder because my brother was seeking revenge for me. Also, they are in extreme poverty and that is just so different from the lifestyle me, or any of my classmates have grown up in. It is just very interesting reading about such "dark" and extremely different scenarios. It is a way that can capture a reader and make them want to keep reading until the story is over.

The author uses suspense and very interesting scenarios to try and capture the reader. It definitley worked on me. It was actaully probably one of my favorite books that i have had to read for school.
